Today was the Atlantic Antic, a 1.5 mile long street fair in Carroll Gardens. There were numerous stages for music, marching bands, people dressed up in crazy costumes and great food. My mouth instantly watered at the grilled corn meal and mozzarella sandwiches. $4!!! A bit expensive but so good. I also had Wine Cellar Sorbet, so tasty. I had it once before, the Pinot Noir, so this time I tried the Sangria.

Here are some photos from the event:

Billy's Playhouse

Billy’s Playhouse was so fun!

Ice Ice Baby

shaved ice and sugar…

Kids

animal faced kids on strange yet cool motorized swing

Dancing to the mojo

This band covered the song “I got my mojo working,” that couple is so odd, but they had a blast!

Mary Weiss

And last but not least, Mary Weiss brought back the good feeling of the Shagri-Las. The perfect way to end the wonderful day.

it was about 9 pm, saturday night. the neighborhood was pumping with hundreds of people walking in the streets. i was walking up dekalb by the lafyette houses with a my friend and suddenly, there was this sound…

“snap snap snap snap snap”

i was like some kid had thrown those little snapping toys to the ground, only it was so loud. then they all started to run. kids, teenagers, pouring out of the projects.

“snap snap snap.”

it was louder this time and more kids were running. some cars got confused and one slammed into the other, “crunch, snap, crunch.” my heart was racing and i wanted to cry, to throw up, to know what happened. everyone was confused. then there were cops, was it five minutes or an hour…

and the sound played in my head “snap snap”

“What the fuck happened?” I asked my friend.

“Oh shit,” she said.

the cops were running into the projects from the place where those kids had run out of. I went in too. There was a group of people standing around a chain link fence. peramedics, cops. A girl was on the ground, sitting, a good sign. she was shot in the arm. her light brown face looked scared, and sad. she wasn’t crying, but she could have been.

“what happened,” i asked a large black guy with dred locks.

“she got shot.”

“but she’s ok?”

“Yah, she will be ok.”

“good.”

and i went home. bewildered, strange. and the sounds of “snap snap snap” ringing in my ears.
