it was about 9 pm, saturday night. the neighborhood was pumping with hundreds of people walking in the streets. i was walking up dekalb by the lafyette houses with a my friend and suddenly, there was this sound…
“snap snap snap snap snap”
i was like some kid had thrown those little snapping toys to the ground, only it was so loud. then they all started to run. kids, teenagers, pouring out of the projects.
“snap snap snap.”
it was louder this time and more kids were running. some cars got confused and one slammed into the other, “crunch, snap, crunch.” my heart was racing and i wanted to cry, to throw up, to know what happened. everyone was confused. then there were cops, was it five minutes or an hour…
and the sound played in my head “snap snap”
“What the fuck happened?” I asked my friend.
“Oh shit,” she said.
the cops were running into the projects from the place where those kids had run out of. I went in too. There was a group of people standing around a chain link fence. peramedics, cops. A girl was on the ground, sitting, a good sign. she was shot in the arm. her light brown face looked scared, and sad. she wasn’t crying, but she could have been.
“what happened,” i asked a large black guy with dred locks.
“she got shot.”
“but she’s ok?”
“Yah, she will be ok.”
“good.”
and i went home. bewildered, strange. and the sounds of “snap snap snap” ringing in my ears.
